Yellowstone - Day 6

Our last day in the park we spent at Old Faithful and the Old Faithful Inn. The Inn is amazing and if you ever get to Yellowstone it is a must see. We then hiked back to Morning Glory Pool (which we spent the week trying to find) and while it was pretty, it wasn't that spectacular... Sapphire pool was a lot prettier. We did get to see Castle Geyser erupt which was pretty amazing. And on our final day in Yellowstone, we finally got the amazing sunset we had been waiting for all week... Unfortunately, we were not anywhere that had a really nice foreground for photos. Regardless, it still was the perfect way to finish off the week!

A day of Elk and Geysers. It's amazing that Yellowstone is just a huge volcano that could blow any minute. The Hot Springs and Geysers really are wonders of nature.

Today we stopped off for another walk through Mammoth Springs, headed to West Yellowstone for a look at some bears and wolves, hiked up to the Artists Paint Pots, saw yet another bear, and watched an amazing storm move across Hayden Valley.

Wildlife and Waterfall day! We started the day off with spotting a hawk while on Six Mile Road... Continued to the highest point in the park for a picnic lunch.... (The air was really thin up there... :-( had a hard time breathing...) And then went to check out some of the waterfalls around the park. Absolutely beautiful!

Important lesson of the day: If it ain't a bear, don't stop and stare!

We about caused multiple traffic accidents because we stopped to take photos of this heard of elk!

Today we visited Mammoth Spring, spotted what we think is a coyote (and not a wolf), stalked more Bison, and saw our first bears... and got pretty darn close to a Grizzly!!!

Our first day in Montana and Yellowstone. We watched the moon set behind a mountain across the valley, stopped at Old Faithful, saw our first Buffalo herd, and drove down to the Tetons Mountain Range... Beautiful Country!!!

This was a fun shoot!!! I took fencing back when I was a student so I had an idea what to expect. I put up a couple of strobes and started shooting. I only wish I had a few gels so I could play around with some color!

I spent a few weeks in the game room watching the workers make a dark dreary basement room into an awesome room where people would actually want to spend time. It's amazing what you can do in a few short weeks when you have the money to play with. :-)

Check out all the framed photos on the walls. That's all me. (I did have some student help... Thanks guys!) I scanned, toned, printed, framed, and directed the hanging of all the photos. Also not the giant Wally Witt's on the far wall. They are photomosaics made up of thousands of yearbook photos from over the years.

What is a Doppelganger you may ask???....

They decked this place out! Wii's, Rockband, five flat screen TV's, games of all sorts, two Bose Sound Systems. It's amazing. Next time you get to Wittenberg, stop by the Student center and check it out!

This is a project I worked on for the new game room. Very, very, very time consuming, but a lot of fun! I used the program Easy Mosaic Home Edition v8.04 (I wouldn't call it exactly easy though...) You have to do a lot of guesswork with the options and settings, but when you get it right, it looks amazing! :-)

I did two of these for the game room. One of Wally Witt and one of his "doppelganger"... I scanned over 2,700 individual yearbook photos (there are duplicate photos in the finished mosaic, so the entire mosaic is made up of more than that....) to create this monster. :-)

We had them printed 5 ft x 5ft and they looked great!

"Having Light We Pass It On To Others"

If my years at Wittenberg taught me anything.... They taught me that giving to others can be one of life's greatest and most fulfilling achievements. I like to think that I 'pass on the light' through my photography. However, sometimes you not only need to pass it on, but also give back.

For four years I feel I have 'given back' to my hometown through my photographs published in the Sidney Daily News, and now it is time to give back to another major influence from my past... To my very own alma mater, Wittenberg University.

Today begins a new chapter as I begin my new position as University Photographer for Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. You can see my photos online at http://www.wittenberg.edu/ and in various publications sent out by the university. Many new adventures and challenges lie ahead and I'm excited to see where they take me.

House Fire

Rarely do you ever have an experience quite like this one. I heard about this fire on the office scanner, and I was on the scene within minutes. By the time I got there you could already see flames a mile from the scene. After a few minutes of photographing on scene, a man come up to me and grabbed my shoulders and said "Don't take photos, this is my house. That is my house that is burning! I'm kidding it's ok. I know it's your job. But that's my house burning! Hey I know you. You took a photo of my daughter at the fair. You know, the one of the girl sleeping on the benches. We love that photo! Everyone did! God, That is my house burning." And he just walked away. Talk about an interesting exchange. I didn't know quite what to say.

A little time later, as I'm taking photos, I look back and see two of the children from the house standing barefoot, all alone, wrapped in blankets, and just watching their house burn. Next thing you know, you start to see the little girls lip begin to quiver, and a few sniffles as she is being brave and trying not to cry. And I couldn't quite take it anymore. I open my one arm, the other full of camera equipment, and next thing you know, I have two kids attached to my side spilling tears and hugging me fiercely. I reassured them that everything was going to be ok after finding out that everyone made it out of the house safely. And so the three of us stood, arms around each other, watching the flames consume the home. Shortly after, the mother and grandmother joined us.

I stayed longer than I would at most fires. Standing there until way past midnight, talking to the family members, exchanging hugs. A few days later, I was told I receive a 'Thank You' phone message from the family, but by then, I had already left the SDN. However, I will never forget that night, or the last, and probably most memorable fire I ever photographed.

I found this after taking a photo for the monthly homefinder cover. I had to drive back a long driveway to get a photo of the house, and on the way out, the sunset was perfect for a photo. After looking around to see what I could put in the foreground, saw these milkweed plants that were dropping seeds.

A Modern Day Cowboy: John Wayne Haynes

Today I met John Wayne. John Wayne Haynes that is... This definitely goes down as one of those interesting people you meet when your lives cross paths. He was a modern-day cowboy traveling from Hudson, MI to Santa Fe, NM entirely on horseback. With him were Misty and Harley his two Appaloosa horses and his dog Shelia, an American Cattle Dog-Border Collie Mix. Only eleven days into his five to six-month journey, he said he had already met many friendly faces. He said "What better way to see the country than on horseback?" I wish him luck on his adventure and safe travels along the way.

Ohio isn't exactly near an ocean... but that doesn't mean hurricanes can't tear through the area! After Ike hit Texas, he decided to make his way to Ohio bringing 71 mph winds along with him! Definitely the strongest wind I've ever seen!

Introducing Louise McGhees

Welcome to Louise McGhees! How can I describe it??? well... Not your typical bar you'd find in Sidney, Ohio! (It's way too cool for Sidney!) :-) It's a place to come and chill, and catch up with friends while you listen to some amazing live music... It just has such a unique atmosphere! There's nothing else like it in the area!

Lucas and I discovered it on accident when a friend of mine told me that this awesome Bluegrass band was playing in this building across the street from Applefest. We were finished for the night and decided to go check it out. Needless to say, we were really happy we did! Not only did we make some new friends, and get to listen to an amazing band, but we got to hang out and take some of the first photos of McGhees. :-)

The only downside... It isn't officially open yet! (But soon...) :-) Enjoy the sneak peek! :-)

Meet Blue Storm... :)

What can I say? They are an awesome group of Bluegrass musicians that have more musical talent then I could ever dream of having. I can enjoy bluegrass music... but I would not exactly call myself a big fan... However, these guys might win me over to become a fan of the genre! I'm still blown away at how awesome they were!

This image is not my usual style... Usually, I would look at it, consider it too grainy and pass it by. But for some reason I decided to start playing with it... and I feel I ended up with something more than just a photo of the fiddle player... It's more along the lines of a 'work of art'... :-) To me, It just looks like something that you would see hanging in a gallery somewhere with a hefty price sticker on it... Maybe I should look at my reject photos more often... :-)

Ok... This is a Random smattering of images from Sunday... First off... The Applefest Parade... (Lots and Lots of marching bands...)

A random image of Brad that my camera decided to take on its own... :-) since it was a good random image... I posted it... :-)

This cute kid was waiting in front of Lucas and I at the Hawaiian Shaved Ice stand... I was blowing up these noise sticks things that I got during the parade... (They were pretty cool but I was like "What the heck am I going to do with these...") so I gave them to the kid... his response... "Are you serious! cool... " :-) Then he thought it was funny to start hitting me with them... :-)

This guy was pretty cool too... :-) He was telling us of how he went down south to pick up this roaster a few weeks before Katrina hit... and had he not bought it on e-bay when he did that it would have been destroyed.... For some reason I kept wanting to call it the "Ragging Rooster" instead of the "Raging Roaster"... The corn on the cob and the baked potatoes he was making in it looked amazing... :-)

And you can't go wrong with cute kids playing in corn... :-)
I ended up burying my camera in the pile of corn... needless to say... my camera was covered in corn dust.

And last, but not least... The only apples at Applefest. :-)

It all started with the Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast where you have to literally catch your breakfast. :-)

It is absolutely fascinating to watch these guys... They have amazing aim. :-) You hardly have to do any work... They hit the plate almost every time... no matter where you stand... It makes you wonder how much they had to practice!

And we can't forget the Pancake Flip off.... no... I didn't win... But I did tie for fourth with a flip of 7" from the target... :-) It was a ton of fun! :-)

I just liked this shot because it had this small town America feel to it. :-)

And this is probably my favorite photo from the entire weekend. Almost missed it when someone walked in front of me... I think I only fired two shots of it off... :-) Don't know why I like it... just do. :-)

Always one of my favorite assignments of the year... (note the sarcasm) Bucher's Beat as it visits Applegfest!!!! Remember... this is happening at like 5:45 am.... and those of you who know me... know I'm not a morning person... :-)

As always... I'm doing the smart thing and avoiding the TV camera... staying safely behind it...

Then... They turn on me... Gang up on me... and put me on the morning news!

:) Next year someone please remind me to put on some make up and drink some caffeine so I actually look decent when they turn on me... ;-)

Lucas and I shot this assignment together... He had a blast.... I liked everything but the Mosquitoes, the mile hike in tall brush, and the little red bugs that seemed to be everywhere...

I'm still not sure exactly what we were supposed to see on this rock...

I did get to play barefoot in the stream.. :)

Lucas was brave and crossed over some treacherous terrain with his two cameras... Me, learning from past experiences... decided not to chance it with all the water... ;-)

Piqua Heritage Festival

I didn't make it to the 3-day Piqua Heritage Festival until Monday... It was like 90 degrees all weekend, and by that time, I was in no mood to shoot. I did however get this cute feature of a kid churning butter the old-fashioned way... :-)

Sunday night I ended up at the Fryburg Homecoming... The most adorable mid-west small-town America festival you've ever seen. I honestly felt like I was walking onto the set of some movie taking place in like Iowa or something... Mom rode with me to keep me company... and we probably stayed longer than we would have because it was just too much fun to people watch there. :-) Almost felt like a small-town festival from another era... :-)

I call this one... "O-68" :-)

Friday Night Lights... (On Saturday...)

After my crazy long day of running between festivals... I ended up at a New Bremen Football game where I was shooting New Bremen for my paper, and the other team for the Delaware paper.... I definitely had a good time... and it was fun hanging out with my big brother... :-)

I thought the sunset was pretty... :-)

At The Beach

Another day of feature hunting and I end up at the beach at Lake Loramie... :-) (If you can even consider this a beach...)

Found these four kids that were just burning off some energy after school. :-) They were a ton of fun to hang out with for awhile. :-)

The Sea monster the guys left lying on the beach... I don't think they left him behind... at least I hope not... There is only so much room in the lake... I'm not sure it could handle another sea monster. ;-)

When I first got there... I was hanging out next to the lily pads and was thinking there really was a sea monster living there when this little guy popped up... :-)

It was kind of nice hanging out there for a while... very relaxing... :-)

I had to take a photo of this guy who had won this brand new Dodge Truck by getting a hole in one at this golf outing.... and I had to wait for him to come in off the course after he finished his round..... and so I was waiting by the truck and taking random reflection shots...
